Jamboree’s redevelopment of the Tahiti Motel and the Stanton Inn & Suites in the City of Stanton transforms two existing motels into 132 studios of permanent housing with services for vulnerable individuals, seniors, and veterans. As part of a coordinated effort between the City of Stanton and the County of Orange, Jamboree’s motel conversions of these existing properties are a pathway to immediately address housing the homeless or those at risk of homelessness who are impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
A state investment of millions for City of Stanton
In the initial phase to convert these motels into supportive housing, Jamboree and American Family Housing are providing immediate housing with extensive supportive services for residents via funds secured through Homekey, a pool of $550 million created from the federal CARES Act coronavirus relief package. Administered by the Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD), these funds are to help local governments purchase hotels and motels to permanently house homeless individuals.
Cities and developers moved swiftly on the program, as these two permanent supportive housing developments were required to be occupied by April 2021. As a result, Jamboree worked quickly to make necessary repairs and replace furnishings and systems at these properties. Onsite services provide the health and stability necessary for formerly homeless residents to successfully live independently. The investment of millions of Homekey dollars breathes new life and opportunity into this important corridor for the City of Stanton.

About Tahiti Motel
Located at 11850 Beach Boulevard with several local amenities nearby, the Tahiti Motel provided great development opportunities. But in its former condition of dilapidated buildings and overall poor property management, it created a draw for the homeless. That’s why city and county officials are reinvesting in the neighborhood while also addressing the need for housing those experiencing homelessness.
Current long-term residents of the Tahiti Motel were relocated. Jamboree has done immediate necessary repairs on the 60 rooms so that the motel’s two buildings were quickly re-occupied. Onsite property management and supportive services are provided by American Family Housing, another local nonprofit serving Orange County since 1985. These onsite services help to ensure the health and stability necessary for these formerly homeless residents to successfully live independently.
After receiving entitlements to operate as permanent housing and securing additional funding, Tahiti Motel will be fully developed into Permanent Supportive Housing, and other building improvements will be made to keep the property well maintained for years to come.
About Stanton Inn & Suites
Located at 7161 Katella Avenue, this 72-room motel has been part of California’s Roomkey, a coordinated effort by state, local agencies, and community partners to secure 15,000 rooms in hotels and motels throughout the state. The goal was to get people experiencing homelessness into a space that allows for safe and supported isolation and quarantining early on during COVID-19.
The redevelopment of this motel conversion also included necessary repairs to the inn’s two buildings so that these rooms were rapidly occupied and operated as immediate housing by April 2021. Onsite property management and supportive services are provided by American Family Housing. These onsite services will help to ensure the health and stability necessary for these formerly homeless residents to successfully live independently.
After receiving entitlements to operate as permanent housing and securing additional funding, Stanton Inn & Suites will be fully developed into Permanent Supportive Housing, and other building improvements will be made to keep the property well maintained for years to come. The plan for this extensive renovation by Jamboree and the City of Stanton was recognized with a 2022 Awards of Excellence by the American Planning Association (APA) – Orange Section for Best Practices.
Are these more homeless shelters?
Jamboree’s motel conversions of Tahiti Motel and Stanton Inn & Suites will create homes, not a shelter. Unlike homeless shelters, residents in permanent supportive housing do not have to leave their apartment every day and return at night, nor do they have to move out after a brief stay.
Individuals must qualify for this specific housing and are referred to the property from the Orange County Health Care Agency. Once residents sign an apartment lease, they may remain in their apartment long-term or as long as they follow the community rules. There will be no onsite intake center for those experiencing homelessness.
The supportive housing Jamboree provides at both 11850 Beach Boulevard and 7161 Katella Avenue combines affordable housing with onsite services for those with disabilities and a history of homelessness. This type of housing enhances the quality of life for the entire neighborhood by bringing neighbors from homelessness into housing with onsite access to trained professionals who can provide services and support – including case management, life skills education, and opportunities for social connectedness and meaningful activities. The goal is long-term housing stability to keep these residents active, stable, and thriving in their local neighborhood.

Interim Housing
At present, both communities – the Tahiti Motel and Stanton Inn & Suites – operate as interim housing while Jamboree secures additional funding. Interim housing is not a type of housing. Rather, it is a housing situation where a person experiencing homelessness is eligible for permanent housing. However, due to a number of circumstances, they are unable to move immediately into housing. In these cases, interim housing keeps the individual engaged with services while moving towards permanent housing.
Who is eligible to be a resident?
- Some prospective residents already possess a voucher and are looking for permanent housing.
- Other prospective residents enter the program having been matched to a voucher but are in the process of completing the necessary paperwork to obtain the voucher.
- All prospective residents are screened through the Orange County Health Care Agency (OCHCA) for qualification to various housing opportunities.
- In addition, prospective residents are matched to rapid rehousing and permanent supportive housing opportunities through the Coordinated Entry (CES). Jamboree’s service team works with prospective residents to obtain all necessary documentation so that they are "document ready" when housing is available.
